psychology is a fascinating subject to discuss (at parties!) and to research (just for fun!). however . . . when it's used to diagnose, label and segregate people, it can become a threat to human rights & freedoms. i feel that psychology, as a field, has taken a life of its own (without our awareness)—it has been given too much power over human culture.
side note: we can't divide health into distinct sections—so-called "physical and mental" being two completely separate areas of health is a misleading concept. in reality, these "sections" of health mix & interact and therefore need to be addressed as one whole system.
if the entire field of psychology were to dissolve, neuroscience, chemistry, anthropology and biology can “take over” many of its functions. as it stands today, it would be nice to see psychology reclassified as entertainment, limiting its ability to analyze and label human beings. in my opinion, many of the "disorders" treated in the realm of psychology can be solved/healed under several sections of actual science.
with that said, it's totally okay to be interested in learning about human behavior and reading so-called psychology books. however, it's not okay to be overpowered and abused by abstract ideas—abstractions should not be allowed to squash basic human rights & freedoms.
